‘Why do two buses arrive at same time?’

-

A LEADING voice for the taxi drivers in Drogheda for many years has said a proper traffic management plan for Drogheda is badly needed.

Addressing the meeting, Kevin Faulkner raised a number of issues, including the traffic lights.

‘ The council should have a dedicated person to re-sync the lights because they don’t work properly, especially on George’s Street and the bottom of Shop Street.’

He said the four pedestrian crossings in the centre of the town were a ‘joke’ and needed to be spread out further, with even one being taken away altogether.

‘People constantly walk across the road at the top of Peter Street and there’s no crossing but there seems to be no problem.’

He asked why do two town buses arrive on the hour, every hour, and then can’t find a place to pull in as the bus bay is full.

‘You see delivery vans parked there and no-one in them. The buses come and sit in the carraigeway and hold up traffic as far back as Dominic Street and George’s Street.

‘ There’s no planning. Why can’t one bus come on the half hour and the other on the hour, but the council don’t seem to listen.’

He said the taxi rank at the Barbican is ‘abused’ by people parking in it, but he asked could the car park at the Laurence’s Centre not be opened at night for events in the centre and perhaps a fee of €2 be charged for it.

But if that could not be done, he suggested that the taxi drivers would ‘give up William Street for a dozen spaces on West Street.’
