Anthony Moore throws hat in ring for FF bid

FIANNA Fáil is to hold its convention to select candidates for the next general election in the Louth and East Meath constituency in early February with local barrister-at-law and FF member Anthony Moore confirming that he intends putting his name forward.

“When the Dáil sits to elect a Taoiseach after the next general election, it is vital that there are at least two Fianna Fáil TDs from Louth and East Meath voting for Micheál Martin. If I am fortunate enough to obtain the nomination, I will help to take a second seat for the party here and to return it to government under his leadership.”

He stressed the importance for Drogheda of having a Fianna Fáil TD in the Dáil, stating, “As someone born and bred in Drogheda, I want to see our town grow and prosper. These are crucial times for Drogheda. We are officially the biggest town in Ireland. We urgently need city status and inclusion in the “Ireland 2040” development plan.

‘Instead, the government is giving us the run-around, relegating us to second-tier status. I will not stand for that. We need a Fianna Fáil TD from this town who will be a strong advocate for Drogheda, South Louth and East Meath in the Dáil and, I hope, in government.

‘ That would be a game-changer for us locally, helping us to attract the jobs and development that we so sorely need and to fulfil our potential as the major tourist hub in the Boyne valley. Having actively campaigned locally for the party for the last number of years, it is clear to me that that is what people want and they are giving me great support.”

As to whether FF could take two seats in Louth and East Meath at the next election, he said “One seat out of five is just not good enough for a national movement like Fianna Fáil. I’m confident that with a geographically balanced ticket we can take two seats. We already have Declan Breathnach TD in Dundalk, who has done great work as our sole FF representative in the Dáil since 2016, particularly in the area of Brexit.

‘With a local candidate like me from Drogheda in the south, we would finally have the strong and experienced team we need to maximise our chances of success in the campaign and I look forward to making that case to our party members between now and the convention.”
