Death of Ms Mary Caffrey

-

MISS Mary Caffrey, popularly known to all her friends in St.Mary’s Hospital, Drogheda, as “Cissie” died last week at the age of 100.

She had been ill for just two weeks and died peacefully in the early hours of Monday. Prior to that she had been up every day and able to walk, with some assistance, around the ward.

Cissie was a patient of St. Mary’s for the past 20 years. Placid and good humoured she endeared herself to everyone.

During her 20 years there she was visited every Thursday evening by two of her nieces, Rosaleen Collier and Agnes Clinton. She was a native of Sampsons Lane and, in her younger years, worked in the local mills.

In April last Cissie celebrated her 100th birthday with a party in the hospital. There were bouquets and letters of congratulations received from many quarters, among them congratulations from the President of Ireland, from the then Ceann Comhairle, Padraig Faulkner and from the then Mayor, Colr. Ray Dempsey.

The parish priest of St. Marys, Fr. John C. O’Reilly celebrated Mass in the specially decorated ward and Rev. Fr. Berchmans of Mellifont Abbey sent in a present of a Rosary beads to Cissie.
