Scarlet Street car park closes

- By HUBERT MURPHY

OVER 50 free car parking spaces are to go on Scarlet Street with the closure of the parking facility at the old fire station.

North & East Housing Association will construct 15 new homes on the fire station site and the adjoining car park.

Plans for the project were announced in recent years and after the planning process, it has now been decided to start work on the development.

‘ The new homes will revitalise this site while incorporating the character of the existing historic neighbourhood and will cater for the housing needs of families and the older persons,’ a council statement on the major project remarked.

‘ The site is currently owned by Louth County Council and is a further example of the strong partnership between the Council and North & East Housing. Construction will commence shortly with a 15 month building programme.

‘North and East Housing are committed to delivering good quality homes in partnership with Louth County Council and are delighted to develop this site in conjunction with the Council.’

However, the statement adds that there will no longer be parking allowed on this site from Thursday 15th February. The site has been used as a car park for a number of years and was mainly used by local shop and business workers in the locality.

It remains to be seen if a replacement car park facility will be opened by the council to meet local demand.
