Number of callouts for Coastguard

Hundreds of people took part in the walk, which made it’s way around town, up to Millmount and down to the Old Abbey taking in all the historic sites of the town.

The money from the event was raised through a huge raffle and through sponsorshi­p cards collected by all those who took part in the walk.

‘It is great and it’s very unique that all the charities all joined together for it,’ said Maureen Ward from Drogheda Homeless Aid.

‘Ilona: We’d like to thank all the people who helped out on the day.We’re very grateful to all the people who donated their time in the cold weather to help out,’ added Ilona Curran from Sosad. ‘We’re very grateful to all the stewards, face painters, gardaí who helped out on the day, there was a huge amount of work done in the background,’ said Ann Shortt from the Drogheda branch of the Alzheimers Society.

The three charities said they were extremely grateful to everyone who took part and helped out in any way on the day. DROGHEDA Coast Guard has dealt with a number of incidents in the local area recently, including a quad biker who sustained lower leg injuries in an accident at Gormanston Beach.

The incident happened on February 4th last when the Coastguard were asked to assist the ambulance service with the casualty, however on arrival Skerries Coast Guard unit, who had been on exercise nearby, had responded and assisted. On February 2nd, the unit was tasked with assisting a car that had become stuck on Bettystown beach. One unit was in attendance.

The Coast Guard were also drafted in to help in two incidents were people were spotted in distresss and were in danger of entering the water.

The first incident happened on January 21st following reports of a woman in distress and in danger of entered the River Boyne somewhere between Slane and Drogheda. Two land units were dispatched to meet up with the BFRRS and Gardai in Slane. On February 4th there was another report of a person in distress, on the Boyne viaduct bridge and in danger of entering the water. Drogheda Coast Guard boat and two land teams responded.
