Swan Lake comes to Drogheda for unique performance
Audiences in Drogheda can enjoy a night at the ballet thanks to a very special performance of Swan Lake coming to Drogheda this Spring. Following a critically acclaimed international tour that included Dublin Theatre Festival; Sadler’s Wells, London and Sydney Opera House, The winner of best production and best costume design at the Irish Times Theatre Awards 2017 comes to Drogheda on the 3 and 4 March 2018.
Presented by Nomad Theatre Network, Swan Lake/Loch na hEala by Michael Keegan-Dolan is a magical adaptation of one of the most famous of all story ballets brought to town as part of the Droichead Arts Centre’s new Spring Programme. Keegan-Dolan has forged a searing new vision for this beloved tale, creating a world of magical realism, powerful imagery and potent storytelling. Featuring a cast of thirteen, including award winning actor Mikel Murfi, this Swan Lake is rooted in a place where ancient Irish mythology and modern Ireland meet.
The Dublin based band Slow Moving Clouds has created a new score that combines Nordic and Irish traditional music with minimalist and experimental influences.
The result is a Swan Lake for our time and a stunning debut for Keegan-Dolan’s new company, Teac Damsa.
Director and Choreographer Michael KeeganDolan founded Teac Damsa in 2016 as a means to forge a deeper connection with his cultural roots, native traditions, language and the rich musical heritage of Ireland. Teac Damsa, ‘House of the Dance’ in Classical Irish, reflects Michael’s ongoing creative journey, further fusing his work to the place from which it originates. Swan Lake/Loch na hEala will also tour extensively in 2018, to New Zealand Festival, Grand Théâtre de la Ville de Luxembourg, and will come to Drogheda after playing at the Abbey Theatre, the Irish National Theatre.
Droichead is delighted that this show will play off site at the Barbican Centre, and have extended their thanks to Declan and his team at the Centre for all their support.
