Scoil Mhuire na Trocaire Catholic schoolsweek
SCOIL Mhuire na Trócaire, Ardee celebrated Catholic Schools’ Week with a week long programme of events on the theme of “Catholic Schools: Called to be a Family of Families”.
A highlight of the week was Grandparents’ Day when the pupils of Second Class hosted a special morning of prayer and celebration. The school hall was filled with grandparents, and indeed great-grandparents, who had travelled from near and far to enjoy the special event.
Canon Peter Murphy, P.P. joined teacher Mrs. O’Malley and the pupils to celebrate the special role Grandparents play in families.
The school hall was colourfully decorated with the pupils’ artwork, stories and poetry. As many of the grandparents come from countries such as Poland, Croatia and India the international names for grandma and granda such as Babcia, Dedushka and Appuppan were also illustrated.
The pupils led the gathering in prayer and thanked their grandparents for teaching them about the past, about the importance of family and about how to cherish it.
The young students then entertained their families with a “Reeling in the Years” medley of songs with hits from Abba, The Beatles and The Dubliners as well as dance routines and instrumental recitals. They also worked with their grandparents to weave St. Brigid’s Crosses. They then enjoyed a tea-party with delicious home-bakes and treats for all ~ a perfect way to chat and mingle.
It was a heart-warming event and the grandparents were all certainly young at heart!
Pope Francis has chosen Dublin to host the World Meeting of Families in August 2018 when families from all over the world will gather to celebrate their lives together, to share their experiences from different parts of the world and reflect on the challenges they face and to grow together in faith.
During the week all classes in Scoil Mhuire na Trócaire explored five daily themes namely Our Family at Home, Our School Family, Grandparents – A Special Part of our Family, Our Parish Family and Our World Family.
“A family that fails to respect and cherish its grandparents, who are its living memory, is already in decline whereas a family that remembers has a future”.
(Amoris Laetitia, Pope Francis)
