Ciara wins the battle of the juniors

-

TWO of Greenhills’ top junior players contested the National Junior Singles tournament final in Lordship last week and victory went to Ciara Floyd over clubmate Karl Thornberry.

The decider was played over 10 ends and both players were very nervous at the start before Karl opened up a two-shot lead after two ends.

However, Ciara gradually settled down and half-way through the contest she had turned the game around to lead by three.

In a crucial period in the match Karl reasserted himself and sustained pressure on his opponent allowed him square the match with three ends remaining.

This was a supreme test of character for Ciara, but she responded once more to re-establish a threeshot lead.

Karl didn’t panic and got the deficit back to two shots before taking the last end by playing two vital backhand draw shots.

With the match level once again, a tied end ensued and Ciara won the toss and put her opponent in first to bowl and a ding-dong battle ensued.

Both players were looking a bit nervous and in the pressure-cooker atmosphere Ciara held her composure to take the spoils by one shot and bring the National title back to Greenhills.

Mentor Alan Thornberry stated that it was great for the club to have two juniors in the National final, and that it was a very entertaining, tighty contested game.

The ongoing Charity Singles Tournament has a €5 entry fee, with an option buy back in at €5 to increase the fund for charity.

Times of play this week are as follows: Tuesday - Juniors 7 to 8.15pm, Seniors 8 to 10.30pm; Thursday - Seniors 8 to 10.30pm.
