SET DANCING WEEKEND

An-Grianan reverberated to the sound of music, feet tapping the floor and all things traditional the previous weekend as hundreds of Set Dancing enthusiasts came for the annual Set Dancing Weekend. Now in its 16th year, this weekend continues to grow in popularity and the numbers attending also increased.

The Official Opening was performed by Maeve Callinan and this was followed by a “Recital” by Seamus and Fidelma Bellew.

Local traditional group Triskell provided the music for the opening Ceili with five members of the Mc Evoy family, Niamh, Fergal, Mairead, Eoghan and Aoife involved in this group. Over the weekend there were workshops in Set Dancing given by Padraig and Roisin Mc Eneany, Step Dancing with Michael Tubridy and Sean Nos with Michael and Kathleen Mc Glynn.

Additional workshops were held in Singing, Tin Whistle, Flute and Concertina. Donie Nolan and Taylors Cross provided the music for the Ceili on Saturday evening. Sunday consisted of workshops and a farewell Ceili with music from the Dartry Ceili Band.

A noteworthy feature of the weekend was the Official Launch of the “Termonfeckin Lancers Set”. This new Set was composed by John and Sheila Mc Evoy and Mairead Devane last year to represent their home area of Termonfeckin at similar events nationwide. Although promoted countrywide since then, it is now an Official Set Dance and is highlighted in the book “Come West Along The Road (Irish Set and Social Dancing) by Pat Murphy. All Swings are in Waltz Hold (4 Figure Set). Great that a Dance representing this area is now being performed at Ceili’s and Set Dancing events all over Ireland and further afield. They are already planning for 2019.
