COMMUNITY ALERT

The Broomfield and District Community Alert, Text Alert mobile number is 086 2193103. Don’t be afraid to make that call, it might make all the difference. An issue that is topical presently is the cost of house insurance.

Things that influence the cost of insurance may include all or some of the following; have external doors a 5 bar locking system, are windows lockable, do you have an alarm, is your alarm monitored, do you have security cameras, do you live in a Community Alert or Neighbourhood Watch Area. These are all desirable, albeit costly, security measures, and insurers may ask about them. Without them you may be considered higher risk.

Of course, if there was no criminality, no burglaries, would these security measures be required? So law abiding citizens, decent, honorable people, must pay the price for those unscrupulous people who make their lives a challenge and misery on a daily basis. We need more Gardai, a greater Garda presence, and Garda Stations manned and open on a regular basis. Sin e craic an seachtain!

BIRD FEEDING

The bird Feeding Programme is working well at a number of locations throughout the District. Do what you can please, to look after our feathered friends, they will appreciate it.

This extremely cold spell is particularly hard on the birds, so they are eating a significant amount of food. It is said that St. Valentine’s Day is the day when the birds pair off, very romantic! If you are thinking of putting up bird nesting boxes, there is good advice on the siting of same from a number of sources. The Bird Watch Ireland website may be worth a browse.

There is a bird feeding table on Hungry Hall Park, if you have food that would be suitable, then the birds will not object! Thanks!

SPRING

Traditionally, St. Brigid’s Day heralded the arrival of Spring, and hopefully a change in the weather, for the better. A few people in the area were seen collecting rushes, so the age old tradition of making St. Brigid’s Crosses prevails. Incidentally, the Daffodils are making valiant attempts to flower and will do so shortly. There are Primroses in flower on Hungry Hall Park. A great year ahead le cunamh De!
