Two new girls teams for Wolfe Tones

-

THE Wolfe Tones GAA are delighted to establish a new U12s and U14s girls team for the club.

The club currently has 25 players and is welcoming other teams to come and work with them.

‘ The girls have been training for the last 14 months but are looking forward to playing in their own jerseys for 2018,’ said coach Stephanie Leonard.

‘We’ve put a lot of work in so we are delighted to be registering an U12 and and U14 team now. We got a lot of help from the Louth registrar and the committee, which we are very grateful for.’

Stephanie said the new teams will give the club a chance to link in and work in tandem with local secondary schools which will help to grow the senior girls teams’ from the ground up.

‘ The girls are all very excited about it and the encouragement from the parents has been amazing too. They’ve been really supportive,’ said Stephanie. ‘A lot of girls since they were five playing very successfully on the mixed teams so to have to leave at 12 is very tough, it’s great that they can continue on now.

A lot of girls would tend to give up at this age or they have to head off to another club but not anymore.

‘ The Wolfe Tones has a fantastic history in the town and it’s great to see the two new teams being established.’

The girls are currently taking part in a four week strength and conditioning training programme at MeTime Functional Training on the Donore Road.

‘We are so grateful that they are going to sponsor us for this four week programme, they are very passionate about fitness and mental health amongst young people and this is a great way for girls this age to get active,’ said Stephanie.

Jane Kerr from MeTime added: ‘We’re only in business a year and we’ve found a huge number of girls this age are lacking in confidence and self esteem and sport is a great way of building that back up.’
