Cormac confident ahead of Malta trip

- MARCUS CAVAROLI

CONFIDENCE is running through the veins of Drogheda pool sensation Cormac Kerr ahead of the upcoming European Championships - and why shouldn’t it!

The 17-year-old St Oliver’s CC student is the reigning World and European Junior champion and he’s not travelling to Malta just to make up the numbers even though he is stepping up to the Under-23 grade for the first time.

In fact Kerr will be competing in the Men’s singles as well as the Under-23 singles and team events, and there’s certainly no inferiority complex ahead of the tournament, which begins next Sunday and continues until the 23rd.

Kerr, from St Finian’s Park, jets out to the southern Mediterranean island on Saturday with the rest of the Irish team, and among them are two other members of the Louth team - Drumcar’s Fergal Cotter and Monaghan-based Paul Kelly.

But all eyes will be on the young Drogheda man and he’s determined to make the most of the opportunity.

‘It’s going to be a step up,’ he said, ‘but I’ve beaten a lot of the top players there before and I’m up for it.

‘I’ve not missed a day’s practice this year and hopefully I’ll get the rewards. I’m aiming to win the Under-23 title and I fancy myself to go far in the men’s competition as well.’

Kerr is grateful for a group of sponsors who have helped fund his trip to Malta and he’d like to thank them for their generosity - namely Joe Murphy of the Mariner pub, Noel Carr of NVM and also Tuites Butchers.
