Brady on a high after podium finish

-

ST PETER’S AC athletes enjoyed most success in the field events as the indoor season kicked off in earnest on Saturday last with the Leinster Juvenile Championships in Athlone IT.

Only a small contingent made the journey to the midlands venue as most of the events didn’t take place until day two, and Niamh Brady was the shining light for the club with an excellent performance in the U-14 Girls high jump.

Niamh has worked hard recently in her high jump training under the watchful eye of coach Brendan Rogers and her hard work paid off as she managed to break her PB twice in the competition to set a new best of 1.40m.

All three girls who stood together on the podium had 1.40m as their best jump on the day, with first being shared by the other two girls and Niamh having to settle for a bronze medal on a countback.

Judith Bell was in the same high jump competition and performed very well, putting her recent injury woes with a very respectable 1.25m. Lucy Smyth, who is also U-14, took part in the 60m sprint the and was unlucky not to make the final.

The Boys Under-14 shot putt had two St Peter’s athletes competing and Dean Murtagh and Ronan Deery both performed well, with Dean throwing 9.94m and Ronan 9.67m to finish fourth and fifth respectively. That qualified Dean for the National Championships and he also

took part in the 60m sprint and high jump.

Lucy Brennan and Isabel Fitzpatrick took part in the U-13 Long Jump, an event that had more than 50 competitors and took a long time to complete. Lucy, however, kept her composure and focus throughout and leaped to a very impressive 4.28m to finish in fourth place and qualify for the Nationals.

Isabel also performed well with a best on the day of 3.37m and took part in the 60m sprint as well, just missing out on a place in the final.

This Tuesday the St Peter’s club annual general meeting will take place at 8pm after training, with all members and parents of juvenile athletes encouraged to come and have their say.
