BELLEWSTOWN LADIES

LAST week’s Winter League competition was won by Catherine Geoghegan Quinn with 21 points.

CLOVERHILL

THE banter at the workplace over the last few weeks between Martin Gill and James Coburn will have thawed the frozen food or even cooked the chickens as their ding dong battle for the Eclectic League top spot continues.

James overtook Martin as number one following his win last week but Martin made hay on his day off on Thursday to get in his telling round to regain top spot. With no play on Sunday due to the snow a lot of players lost the opportunity to gain some ground.

As we enter the last two weeks of the competition Martin (18) produced a best ever round of golf as he covered the 12 holes in just 6 over par for a winning nett score of 33. Martin had to play that well to see off one of his playing partners Brendan O Rourke (17) by just two shots as the Dundalk duo made it a podium one-two. Benny Tierney (7), Declan O Neill (9), Brendan Hughes (14) and JJ Hazzard (12) were the leading quartet of movers on the overall league ladder where the top six finishers will feature in the prizes in a fortnights time.

Patrick Malone will be hosting his Captain’s Drive in on Sunday March 4 at 9.15am. As is the norm the Drive-in will be followed by a shotgun start scramble. Timesheet is posted in the clubhouse and is filling up nicely with a good number of ‘new faces’ already on the sheet. The usual seeded handicap draw for mixing up the teams will take place on Friday March 2.

Brendan Hughes posted a winning score on Thursday morning to take top prize in the 12 hole sweep. Brendan had a point to spare over runner-up Charlie O Hare. Seniors continues on Thursday at 10am. Seniors boss Frank Ryan asked me to reminded all Senior members of a special presentation day on Thursday March 1.

The competitions committee are delighted to announce that our re-vamped 2018 Wednesday Cup 9 hole competition will have a new sponsor. When we say ‘new’

DUNDALK

CAOLAN Rafferty was the second best placed Irishman at the South African Strokeplay Championship which was held at Pecanwood Golf Club last week.

Rafferty finished in joint 26th place on -11, four shots behind Alex Gleeson of Castle. The tournament was won by Sweden’s Oliver Gillberg who shot a phenomenal 27-under par to win by one shot.

Rafferty found himself six shots off the lead after an opening round of two-under par 70 wich included four birdies. He fell further behind after the second round when he shot a 71 to make the half-way cut on -3, some 12 shots off the lead.

That left him tied for 49th place, but he moved up two places after posting a two-under par 70 in the third round. Rafferty recovered from a dreadful start as he double-bogeyed the opening hole and went on to shoot six birdies as well as two bogeys.

That suggested he was beginning to acclimatise to the conditions and he proved it in the final round when he carded his best round of the week, a six-under par 66, and climbed 21 places up the leaderboard to finish on -11.

The tournament left Rafferty with plenty of positives as all four rounds were under par and he managed to throw in a low one as well. He has now headed, along with his Irish teammates, to Glendower Golf Club for the African Strokeplay Championship which runs from Tuesday to Friday.

The closing date for entries for the Winter League, sponsored by Tiernans Centra Blackrock, is this Friday. The entry is €5 and entries should be placed in the box in the club bar with full names and handicap written on the envelope.

The Captain’s Drive-in takes place on Sunday week, February 25th, and will be the centrepiece of a day that starts with a 9am shotgun start for a Four-Man Scramble. It will be followed by two ninehole Mixed Scotch Foursomes competitions down the front and back nines, with a 1.30pm shotgun start. The timesheets for all three competitions open this Thursday at 11am on the BRS System.
