CLOVERHILL

THE pressure is on as we enter the last week of the 12-hole Eclectic Competition as the overall title and top six prize winner places are very much in the melting pot.

Only 3 shots lie between 10 players and the current occupiers of sixth spot and a lot less between the current top three title contenders.

The key thing in all of this weeks play is that all those players in contention for honours are actual regular playing partners or work mates which only helps with the tension and rivalry.

Leader by two shots is Martin Gill from his Dundalk work colleague James Coburn. Local man Colum Quinn hopes to jump from the back seat of his regular playing partners taxi as he and Noel Magill are in joint third place a shot behind James.

The regular weekly ‘wee wager’ will no doubt be superseded by ‘bragging rights’ this coming weekend.

Silverbridge men Christopher Reel and Pete McCreesh are on level terms with the low handicap section a shootout between Daniel Hughes and Benny Tierney as they are also level.

There are a few players that are a few shots out of the reckoning at present but swapping a few double bogey’s for par’s or better could see them spring a surprise.

The course will be busy all this week as players get in early rounds just in case the weekend weather is not good (wink, wink) in this repeater competition. All will be revealed next week.

This week a one under par round was good enough to give Benny Tierney a winning nett 37 to win by two shots from Noel Magill.

Patrick Malone will be hosting his Captain’s Drive -in on Sunday March 4 at 9-15am. As is the norm the Drive-in will be followed by a shotgun start scramble. Timesheet is in the clubhouse or contact the competition convener Joe on line to book your place. Last day for names is Thursday March 1 before the draw for teams is made.

The seniors and, indeed, the entire club were saddened to hear of the passing of Jack Moran. The club and members would like to extend it’s sympathy to his entire family circle on their loss. Ar dheis De go raibh a anam dilis.

Seniors boss Frank Ryan had a straight head to head with Fr Kevin Cullen on Thursday morning and following a titanic battle they finished level on points and sportingly declared joint winners instead of going to the countback to split the pot.

A reminder to all senior members of a special presentation day on Thursday March 1.

DUNDALK

DUNDALK’S Clem Walshe was the winner of Sunday’s Hilary Golf outing, sponsored by Rabo Direct, at Seapoint with a fine score of 70 in difficult wet conditions. The five handicap player was a model of consistency shooting nines of 37 and 38 to beat Paul Reilly (Co. Louth) by a single shot.

Congratulation to Brendan Lawlor who produced a superb performance earlier this month to win the European Disabled Golf Association’s Troia Trophy by ten shots in Portugal. The win followed a fourth place finish in his debut EDGA outing last November at the Pestana Vila Sol course, in the Algarve.

Congratulation also to Caolan Rafferty who finished sixth in the African Amateur Strokeplay Championship in last week. He finished as the leading Irishman and also led Ireland to second place in the team event.

Mark Browne (22) was the winner of Sunday’s 13 Hole Singles Stableford competition with an excellent score of 33pts which was two better than Michael Gill (8). Gill, who also shot the day’s best gross score of 25pts, edged out Peter O’Brien (15) for the runners-up spot. O’Brien took Category Two with Gregory McCaughey (8) taking Category One and Diarmid McAdam claiming Category Three.

After picking up one point for a double bogey six at the first, Browne got his round really going at the second which he birdied for four points. He followed that with three consecutive three point pars at the fifth and sixth and a three point bogey at the seventh.

Although he had to settle for a one point double bogey at the eighth, Browne got quickly got back into the groove with three point pars at the ninth and tenth and a two point double bogey at the 11th.

He didn’t let up over the final four holes as he had a three point par at the 15th and a three point bogey at the 16th before finishing with two point bogeys at the 17th and 18th to cover the 13 holes in an impressive 33pts.
