Daffodil day plan for Drogheda

- By FIONA MAGENNIS

LOCAL volunteers, businesses and supporters will once again be painting the town yellow this March in support of Daffodil Day in aid of the Irish Cancer Society.

The event will take place on March 23rd and once again the people of Drogheda are being asked to dig deep and show their support for what is a fantastic cause.

The town has always been a huge supporter of Daffodil Day and last year proved to be no exception with the amount raised surpassing the six figure mark.

‘We raised over €100,000 last year, which is just phenomenal,’ said Lizanne Allen from the Drogheda Volunteer Group. ‘We are definitely the biggest fundraising town in Ireland, which is something we should be patting ourselves on the back about and we have no doubt the support will be just as loyal as ever.

‘I’d love to match that this year. For a bunch of ten ladies we’re doing alright, we couldn’t do it without the people of Drogheda, they need to take a bow for achieving all we have and of course the businesses and sponsors. The support we receive is just amazing.’

The annual Daffodil Day Fashion Show takes place on Wednesday, April 18th and and anyone who would like to volunteer at the fashion show or on the day should contact Lizanne directly on 086-2774271.

The men’s lunch, meanwhile will take place on Friday, March 16th in the Westcourt.

The annual nationwide Dafffodil Day event takes place on Friday, March 24th and as always the local committee want to paint the town yellow and are encouraging local businesses and shops to get involved with balloons, banners and posters. Anyone who would like to participate can contact the committeee who will provide much of the paraphenalia needed to transform their window into a mellow yellow picture.

The Daffodil Day committee will also be participating in the St Patrick’s Day parade and anyone who would like to help with this can once again contact Lizanne or any member of the committee. ‘We’re going to march in yellow and we’d love people to join us,’ said Lizanne.

The Irish Cancer Society-Drogheda Volunteer group, was established by Lizanne Allen in 1987, in response to a phone call looking for volunteers to do a street collection in Drogheda, for the first ever Daffodil Day (Conquer Cancer).
