-

IT’S been a long road, but Cllr Tommy Byrne is delighted with the €45,000 allocated for safety works at Sunnyside, close to the Sacred Heart.

He says the school urgently needs a Pedestrian Crossing from the school to the sports field opposite, which is in constant use by the 600 students.

‘ The Pedestrian/Zebra crossing would also greatly assist motorists in slowing down, thereby increasing safety for students, coming from and going to school,’ he states. The school are appreciative of the work already carried out by Louth County Council in repairing footpaths on the school side.

He adds that the improvements at Cromwells Lane/ Blackbush Lane/ Sacred Heart School Junction, are vital.

‘ This area is lethal for students walking, other pedestrians and motorists, which can .

‘I’m also calling for once again for a footpath and safety railing under Calvary Bridge, to include a pathway for pupils attending the Sacred Heart Secondary School. With such two large schools adjacent, a pathway and road markings are essential. There are also many other pedestrians using this main artery to catch a train or walk into town and visit Calvary Cemetery.

Following my Notice of Motion, Louth County Council stated that the works would commence at Calvary Bridge, providing funding was available for 2018, which we have thankfully now received.
