Dunleer take over at indoor event

THE race commentato­r quipped that Dunleer AC were taking over at last Thursday’s NIA Live Indoor meeting as the local club had three of the first seven finishers in the 1500m race.

Garry Campbell was second in 3:49.31, followed closely by Darragh Greene (3:52.20) and Jack Boylan (3:55.55) and Greene went on to take victory in Saturday’s Fitzer 5k in Dundalk.

Dunleer AC also secured an impressive medal tally from Saturday’s Leinster Indoor Championsh­ips, with 3,000m gold for Karen Costello (Over-40) in a time of 10:35 and silver in the same age group for Nicola Welsh thanks to a personal best run of 10:38.

Iveta Kaugare won gold in the weight for distance Over40 competitio­n and silver in the shot putt, while bronze went to Santis Kaugars in the men’s shot putt Over-35.

Indeed, it proved to be a memorable weekend for the Kaugare family as daughter Liene captured Under-17 shot putt gold on Sunday on day two of the championsh­ips.
