Morland retains her title
CUSHINSTOWN AC’S Elizabeth Morland has captured a National Senior Indoor title for the second year in succession after another superb performance at the championships in Abbotstown.
The Tara native, who doesn’t turn 20 until this coming weekend, retained her 60m hurdles title with a run of 8.64sec and also came fourth in the shot put after throwing a best of 11.64m.
Shannon Sheehy just missed out on a bronze medal as she came fourth in the long jump with a best of 5.60m.
Shane Joyce was sixth in the triple jump final (13.26m) and Michael O’Sullivan was placed ninth in the shot put (9.76m) after just missing out on qualification for the final.
Meanwhile, days two and three of the Leinster Indoor Championships went ahead over the weekend and there was a packed stadium on Sunday for the relay races where Cushinstown had four teams taking part.
The Under-12 Boys 4x100m relay quartet featured Kevin Doyle, Luke McAleese, Jyles Gogan, Eoin McLoughlin and Andrew Gough and the boys all put in great performances - especially as they were all competing for the first time on the 200m track in Abbotstown.
The U-13 Girls 4x100m relay team of Aoife Rohan, Nia Hederton, Ellen Gough and Isabella Gogan also ran very well.
The U-14 Girls 4x200m relay team of Laura Bolster, Aoife Rohan, Isabella Gogan and Ella Barry ran a great race and won through to the finals and finished in fourth place overall. This was a great result, especially as Aoife and Isabella were running up an age group.
The U-15 Girls 4x200m of Ava Purcell, Amy Callaghan, Niamh Quinn and Mollie White also put in a great performance and were very unfortunate to just miss out on getting through to the finals.
The U-19 shot putt event also took place on Sunday and Aoife Jane Lenehan put in a great performance to claim the silver medal.
