CLOVERHILL

IN sporting circles they say that the best form of defence is attack and that is exactly what Eclectic League Leader Martin Gill (18) did for the last round of the league. Martin was 2 ahead of his fellow workmate James Coburn (11) but actually doubled his lead at the end up by bettering his already impressive score by 2 shots.

Indeed Dundalk native Martin led home a quartet from ‘the town’ who dominated the competition. There were other significant movers on the last week as Brendan O Rourke (17) moved up to joint second in the table with James Coburn. Club Captain Paddy Malone (5) came out of the pack to take the back seat fourth spot in his father-in-law’s taxi in behind co-drivers and regular playing partner rivals Noel Magill (15) and Colum Quinn (17) who finished in joint third place. Benny Tierney (7) was in the prizes, taking fifth spot a shot ahead of the Silverbridge duo of Christopher Reel (9) and Pete McCreesh (12).

Martin made it a weekend double as he also won the nett weekly prize to go along with overall winner with a shot to spare over “his mentor” Brendan O Rourke.

Patrick Malone will be hosting his Captain’s Drive -in next Sunday March 4 at 9-15am immediately followed by a shotgun start Scramble. The teams will be announced during the week. Everything though will be depending on how the “Beast from the East” behaves during the week.

The opening round of the Seniors Spring League was held in ideal weather conditions on Thursday morning and it was Seniors Convenor Frank Ryan who was fastest out of the traps. The 12 hole 5 week League saw Frank emerge as the winner with 25 points with Joe Hazzard and Brendan Hughes next with 22 points apiece. Round two will be next Thursday at 10 am.
