COMMUNITY ALERT

The judicial system is being called on to play its part in the fight against rural crime. ‘A request by the Director of Public Prosecutions Claire Loftus, to the Court of Appeal, that it should provide sentencing guidelines in burglary cases is important. It reflects growing public concern over a wide discrepancy in penalties imposed for this offence, depending on the locality, crime rate and the judge involved. It also shows official frustration at the slow progress of the Judicial Council Bill through the Oireachtas ‘(Irish Times: Thur. 22nd Feb. 2018). Following a number of high profile crimes in rural areas across the country in recent times, some with fatal consequences, the DPP, last week called for harsher consequences, longer sentences, for people who rob elderly residents in rural areas. Many of these crimes are perpetrated by criminals with a list of previous convictions, serial repeat offenders in many cases. Rural crime was given an airing on Prime Time on RTE on Thursday 22nd Feb. last, when Minister for Justice, Charlie Flanagan, TD went head to head with Independent TD, Mattie Mc Grath on the issue. Whats happening in rural areas around the country is nothing short of horrific, and must be tackled, now! Those of us who live in rural Ireland need to support these recent calls, and should be demanding through our Public Representatives, that action be taken immediately.
