Dream start to 2018 for Boyne all-rounder Amy

-

WITH the severe weather last weekend, athletics events across the country were postponed, including the final day of the Leinster Indoors - featuring many Boyne AC athletes - which will now take place next Sunday.

However, the pause in the busy schedule presented the opportunity for Boyne AC and athletics fans to reflect on the magnificent achievements of multi-eventer Amy McTeggart in this year’s Indoor season.

Now competing at senior level, this life-long member of Boyne AC has achieved what many can only ever dream of, but serves as an inspiration to all young athletes.

January saw her finish in second place in the All-Ireland Combined Events Championships in Athlone, a track very familiar to Amy as she now studies in Athlone IT and can make full use of the superb facilities on offer.

Finishing a mere 25 points behind the winner, Amy secured a new PB total of 3,636 points, awarded based on results in each event, and also secured a PB in her 800m (2:26) and long jump (5.49m).

A week later it was off to the new National Indoor Arena in Abbotstown, where she took two National titles in the U-23 Indoor Championships, thanks to a win in the high jump (1.70m) and long jump (5.45m).

With a week to rest, she then went on to win the high jump at the AAI Indoor Games, again in Abbotstown, with a best of 1.65m. A new PB in the long jump followed, where Amy jumped 5.72m to take silver in the All-Ireland Senior Indoor Championships, and she also came second in the high jump, with a super 1.70m clearance.

Continuing a busy February, Amy then took part in the AIT Grand Prix, where many of the top international athletes compete as preparation for the World Indoor Championships, and a solid jump of 5.51m saw her finish second in the Long Jump.

To complete her Indoor season, and her third competition in a week, Amy then went on to take two golds and a silver in the Leinster Senior Indoor Championships, with a 1.70m winning jump in the high jump and a long jump of 5.48 to also take first place. She also added a silver medal to her collection as she threw a new PB of 10.00m in the shot putt.

Always there for all the young aspiring athletes in Boyne AC, Amy recently gave thanks to the club for all their support over the years, and reflected on what has been her most successful season to date, achieving a massive total of five new personal bests.

She is especially pleased with her long jump of 5.72m as it is a discipline she has been working hard on.
