COMMUNITY MOURNS FOR MAX AFTER BETTYSTOWN ROAD ACCIDENT

- By HUBERT MURPHY

‘HEAVEN has gained another angel way too soon.’

Words from the heart amidst a sea of tributes for Mornington man Max Mason by those who held him dear.

The coast area was left reeling last week with the tragic death of the 17-year-old 5th year student at Colaiste na Hinse while cycling on the Golf Links Road in Bettystown.

He was involved in an accident with a minibus on Tuesday afternoon.

Within hours, the location where he died became a shrine to a young soul.

A former member of the St Colmcilles GAA Club, many wrote of their grief, describing Max as a gentleman and ‘one in a million’.

A poignant poem, with its ink beginning to run in the soft rain, heralded the young man, ‘a point now marked on a postcard road, Max, good soul, sail high abroad, over the sky, above the sky....’

Others wrote ‘We are all utterly devastated by the tragic news of the death of Max. A lovely young presence has been taken from the community and we will all miss him on the road of life. Our hearts are with his friends and family on this cruelest of blows. In our deepest thoughts and humble prayers.

RIP Max....may god welcome you with open arms & the angels look over you...... our thoughts and prayers are with his Mum, family & friends.’

Max of Jaskin View, Tower Road, Mornington, will be sadly missed by his heartbroken mother Tracy, his grandparents Noel and Claire Woods and grandmother Nora Mason, his many aunts, uncles, cousins, relatives and large circle of friends.

Young tears were shed on Sunday as friends and school colleagues gathered in the Star of the Sea Church, Mornington for a final farewell.

Gardai are appealing for witnesses to contact Ashbourne Station on 01 8010600, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any garda station.
