Council ‘need to get in touch’

-

LOUTH County Council need to get in touch with the people by attending public meetings and listening to views and also explaining their role as the local authority.

A number of speakers also called on Drogheda politicians to cast aside ‘party politics’ and unite for the sake of the people.

It was claimed that many have their own agenda and that is pulling against the best possible outcome for the overall residents of the town.

‘I have spoken to politicians and they have all had their own agenda. Party politics has held back this town for years and they’ve gone against decisions that were for the betterment of the town,’ Rory Mohan explained.

He feels there is a ‘can’t be bothered’ attitude out there. ‘ There was a water leak on the Donore Road and I was told to contact Irish Water and it’s still leaking. What is wrong with the flow of traffic around town. Georges Street is being held up for Patrick Street when there’s no flow of traffic on it. Why are there not more roundabouts in Drogheda.’

He says the issue people have raised in relation to getting rid of the toll into the town is the loss of money. ‘But it should be seen the other way, it’s a toll on local people,’ he remarked.

Many issues were raised, including:

* Buses are parking on both sides of the road at The Thatch and causing a danger.

* Wheelchairs can’t get past at Boyle O’Reilly due to cars parked on the footpath.

* The bus bay and loading bay on West Street are too often used for parking, meaning the town buses stop in the street.

* There is only one line of the dual carriageway available at St Mary’s church on a Sunday people park on double yellow lines.

* The 24-hour taxi rank at the Barbican is full of cars.

*The Windmill Road is the dirtiest street in Drogheda and the council should deliberately close it at a certain time and clean it!
