Glyde sink their neighbours in Sheelan Shield shock

-

THERE was plenty of action in the Paddy Sheelan Shield over the weekend with Glyde Rangers coming out on top against local rivals, St Mochtas, on a scoreline of 0-10 to 0-7.

There was little between the teams throughout the game but the Tallanstown side just about had the edge. At half time Glyde held a 0-6 to 0-4 advantage and they went on to win by three despite Eamonn O’Neill, Barry Mulholland, Andrew English, Gerry Garland and Brendan Duff landing points for the Mochtas.

Meanwhile, Clan na Gael made it a worthwhile trip to Kilkerley on Saturday evening as they recorded a 1-12 to 1-8 victory.

It was the hosts who had the better of the first half and a goal from Shane Lennon saw them take a 1-6 to 0-5 lead into the break.

However, the Clans got on top in the second period and a goal from Billy Smith saw them assume control. Robbie Curran landed four points and JJ Quigley kicked three, while others to contribute to the scoring were Paul Crewe and Stephen Coleman.

Roche Emmets are also into the next round after they recorded a 1-13 to 0-11 win at home to the O Raghallaighs.

Liam Dawe scored the only goal of the game before the break to give his side a 1-7 to 0-5 lead at the interval. The hosts never looked in trouble after the break and they held on for victory on a night when Bernard McConnon, Liam Carthy and Dan O’Connell were all on target.

Nh Mairtin will also feature quarter-finals after coming out on top against Sean O’Mahonys on a 2-11 to 2-7 scoreline at Monasterboice.

The Mairtins began well and despite a goal from a Ben McLaughlin penalty they took a 2-5 to 1-3 lead into the break.

The Dundalk men hit back in the second period when McLaughlin added his side goal but they were unable to complete the comeback as the hosts held out for a deserved victory.

St Josephs booked their place in the next round thanks to a hard fought 0-12 to 0-10 win over Glen Emmets.

Oisin McGuinness, David Kieran and Alan McKenna had early points for the Joes but James Butler kicked three to help the Emmets draw level at five points apiece at the break.

The sides also shared the next ten points to keep things level entering the closing stages before late points from Alan Quigley and Craig Doherty handed victory to the Joes.

St Fechins also advanced thanks to a 4-14 to 2-10 victory over Nh Fionnbarra at Beaulieu on Saturday evening.

At the end of a tight first half it was the home side who held a slender 1-7 to 1-6 lead with the Barrs goal coming from Darren McConnon.

However, the second period was dominated by the Fechins who added three goals to their tally to claim a ten point win. Padraig Butterly scored a consolation goal for the Finbarrs.

In the remaining game on Saturday, Geraldines had a 1-8 to 1-7 win over St Brides.
