MACBRIDE P&P

THE sun shone on the final day of play for the MacBride Winter League, which took place weekend.

Week six was an 18 gross competitio­n. The Grade 1 winner was Barry Thornton with a score of 42 gross. The Grade 2 prize went to Joe Reilly who had a score of 51 gross.

The overall League winners were also decided, and taking the title with 60 under par was the winning team of Mark Donnelly, Greg Hoey and Jimmy Flood. Finishing only two shots behind on -58 were the runners-up David O’Brien, Darren Dooley and Audrey Donnelly. The presentati­on of prizes to all the various winners took place following play on Sunday.

The MacBride club committee and members would like to congratula­te local player Mark Millar on winning the Chile Open last week. Mark was also one of five Irish players who made up the 11-person European team who were successful in defeating South America in the Ryder Cup-style Fernando Morgado Tournament.

Our Annual Flag Day took place on Saturday and we would like to thank all those who generously supported us. Local club Cement will hold their Open Scotch Foursomes this week from Thursday to Sunday, with the Ray Hanratty Memorial Scratch Cup taking place on Monday April 2nd. Members are encouraged to show your support.

MANNAN CASTLE

A three-person waltz was held on St. Patrick’s Bank Holiday Monday which turned out to be the battle of two families the Whelan’s and the Hannaffy’s, with three generation of the Whelan’s defeating two generation of the Hannaffy’s. Winning with 55 points were Seamus Whelan, Ryan Finley and Stephen Whelan Runner ups with 54 points were Alex Hannaffy, Con Hannaffy and Anselma O’Leary from East Cork GC.

The senior men played on Tuesday 20th March over 10 holes with Sam Duffy taking the honours with a score of 25 points and Robert Browne coming second with 22 points.

It was great to see so many ladies play in the first Ladies Singles Competitio­n of the year over 13 holes on the 21st March. The winners were two ladies who didn’t hibernate over the winter months, these two were out practicing even on the most frigid of days. 1st Helena Connolly (26) 25 points, 2nd Denise McGuinness (22) 24 points.

There will be no competitio­n in Seapoint this week due to Cement hosting their Open Scotch Foursomes from Thursday until Sunday and their Scratch Cup on Easter Monday.

The next competitio­n in Seapoint will be an 18 gross - times of play Friday April 6th and Saturday 7pm at 2pm and Sunday 8th at 9.30am.

Seapoint are proud to be hosts of the Irish Life PPUI Internatio­nal Irish Open Championsh­ip, which is scheduled to be held on August 25th and 26th.
