Fintan closes up on Dyer St for last time

January 1996

DROGHEDA man Fintan Murphy (right) was sad to leave Dyer Street after over 15 years in business there.

His electrical shop has moved to Acorn Mews in Francis Street and the new premises, he says, has helped overcome what might have been a worse experience.

‘I’m very happy with my new shop. It is in a lovely area and made the whole situation easier for me. But I was still sad to leave Dyer street and I think it is very sad that we have lost another medieval street in the town.

‘I’m disappointed with the powers that be for doing this. It is a piece of history just wiped out by the bulldozers and I can’t see that as a good thing.

‘From a business point of view it suits me though and I feel I am in a safer part of town now.’ Mr. Murphy watched last week as the bulldozers knocked the building which housed his business for many years.

‘It was sad to watch and a funny feeling too because lots of people took photographs of me closing up shop and of me watching the demolition. I’ve never been more photographed in my life!’
