Cairnes advertisin­g mirror up for auction on Monday next

A TASTE of old Drogheda will go under the hammer next Monday as part of a sale by Joe Lennon, Milltown Country Auction Rooms, Milltown, Dromiskin, Dundalk.

Included is a William Cairnes and Sons (Drogheda brewery) advertisin­g mirror and it is set to fetch between €300 and €400 (pictured)

Originally situated on the Scotch Hall site, Cairnes Ltd, was one of the original firms of Irish brewers dating back to 1772 with the foundation of the Castlebell­ingham Brewery. In 1825, William Cairnes, who was related by marriage to the owners of the ’ Bellingham brewery, founded the brewery at Marsh Road, Drogheda, which, for over 150 years, gave employment to almost 200 workers and the firm was famous for its ales and stout.

It closed down in the mid 60s. The sale, in conjunctio­n with Lev Mitchell & Sons, auctioneer and valuer, Slane, takes place on Monday 9th April at noon in Milltown Country Auction Rooms.

There are the complete house contents from No 5 Queens Street Warrenpoin­t, Co Down on kind instructio­ns from the owners who are downsizing. Also lots from Riverside House, Drogheda.

Items to include in the auction are a Regency mahogany inlaid sideboard fitted with four drawers, wine compartmen­t and brass gallery rail, valued at €500-600. Victorian mahogany arch top 2 door bookcase, €400 - 500. 18th century carved oak paneled mule chest, €600 - 800. Superb pair of Chinese urns and lids with mounted lions stamped and dated 1895, €600 - 800.
