100 years of history for the Meath Society

-

THIS year marks the centenary of the Meath Archaeological and Historical Society which was founded in 1918 by a group of 14 patriotic people (including nine priests of the diocese of Meath) to preserve and promote the rich heritage of the ancient territory of Meath (comprising Meath, Westmeath and parts of Offaly).

The Society has gone through many fluctuations and resurgences over the 100 years - today it has over 400 members, hosts an annual programme of lectures around the county (on local history, archaeology, folklore, etc.), organises outings to heritage sites, publishes an acclaimed journal Ríocht na Midhe, and is actively involved in many heritage promotion and planning issues around the county.

In order to mark the centenary, Bishop Michael Smith will offer Mass in the Cathedral of Christ the King, Mullingar, on Sunday 8 April at 11.00 am. Afterwards, the Cathedral museum will be open to visitors. All welcome.
