Super Duleek shock league leaders

DULEEK TRIM CELTIC 3 1

DULEEK gave their survival hopes a major boost and did Newfoundwell a big favour in the process with this surprise victory over the league leaders Trim Celtic on Sunday.

The home side stated like they meant business, scrapping for every loose ball and looking dangerous and composed in possession.

So it was no surprise when Matthew Noone netted the opening goal after just eight minutes, dispatching a great finish from just inside the box to the bottom corner after good work from Kavanagh to create the opportunity.

Title-chasing Trim equalised just four minutes later when a free kick into the box wasn’t cleared properly and the ball was forced home in the ensuing scramble.

However, Duleek didn’t panic and continued to boss proceedings before ace marksman Barry Kavanagh headed to the ent from six yards after James Burke beat his man on the right and picked out Kavanagh’s run with a deft cross to the near post.

With their tails up Duleek smelt blood and just five minutes later, some good interplay between Duff, Noone and Kavanagh carved out a great opportunity for McGroggan, who still had work to do, but bent a superb finish in off the far post from 15 yards.

Duleek shut up shop after the break and made life extremely difficult for Trim.

The leaders did have a go, but the home side defended well and looked dangerous on the break as the half progressed.

Daly, Nugent, Flaherty and Duff were solid and the midfield pairing of McDonnell and Murphy battled to the bitter end for what could be a vital victory for the green and white. DULEEK: Mark Kelly, Robbie Daly, Caolan Duff, Gary Nugent, Jamie Flaherty, Bryan Murphy, James Burke, James Guilfoyle, Barry Kavanagh, Cormac McGroggan, Matthew Noone. Subs: Chris McDonnell for James Guilfoyle (20), Karl Dyas for Cormac McGroggan (60), Conor Tully for James Burke (80).
