PETER McVerry Trust, the homeless and housing charity, is set to open a new regional office in Drogheda to establish a presence in the northeast. The office will mark the beginning of a programme of social housing provision by the trust in County Louth. A spokesman for the trust confirmed that a premises in the centre of the town would be operational from the middle of this month, and they will start looking at possible locations for units to provide social housing in Drogheda. ‘ We have now secured an office in the town centre and will look to start kitting it out in the next few weeks,’ they revealed.

PETER McVerry Trust, the homeless and housing charity, is set to open a new regional office in Drogheda, to establish a presence in the northeast. The office will mark the beginning of a programme of social housing provision by the trust in County Louth.

A spokesman for the trust confirmed that a premises in the centre of the town would be operational from the middle of this month, and they will start looking at possible locations for units to provide social housing in Drogheda.

‘We began looking at providing permanent accommodation with wrap-around supports in Louth, Cavan and Monaghan last September,’ Francis Doherty told the Drogheda Independent.

‘We have now secured an office in the town centre and will look to start kitting it out in the next few weeks.’

The charity began working in partnership with Limerick City and County Council in 2016 to identify and respond to housing needs in the city and county. It is thought they will carry out similar plans when they open in Drogheda.

‘We respond to needs as they are required, as we did in Limerick,’ added Mr Doherty.

‘We have plans for maybe 20 units and have been looking at possible locations in the town centre, which would be suitable for our needs.’

The social housing programmes are funded in part by the Capital Assistance Scheme and private donations to Peter McVerry Trust.

The plan is to ease pressure on existing homeless facilities in Drogheda and provide long-term support for those in the most difficult situations because of homelessness.
