PORT TO CARRY OUT CLEAN UP IN THE AREA

- BY ALISON COMYN

IT’S been an issue of concern for residents for years, but now Drogheda Port Company has pledged to clean up the port warehouses area on the North Strand close to the docks.

The commitment has been welcomed by local Sinn Féin representatives, who say it’s long overdue for those living alongside ‘dirty and dilapidated’ warehouses.

Cllr Kenneth Flood said they recently met with The Drogheda Port Company as part of their public consultation process before they drafted a Master Plan for the company’s future.

‘As public representatives we receive many calls and emails on issues surrounding the Port, and we brought these residents’ concerns, such as the parking regime and the North Strand area, to the Port company’s attention,’ he told the Drogheda Independent.

‘ There are a lot of issues we still need to work on, but one piece of good news did emerge from that meeting. The Port Company have now purchased the Drogheda Docklands site from the previous owners whom they were leasing from in the past. These warehouses are a major bugbear for local residents due to their dirty and dilapidated appearance. The Port Company gave us a commitment that now they are the owners, the area would receive the necessary attention and be cleaned up.’

The port company has launched their public consultation process and submissions can be made until April 30th.

Cllr Flood urges all residents to make a submission.

‘We also look forward to the Borough District of Drogheda Councillors making a joint submission, as the transfer of shares to Louth County Council and this consultation process give us a unique opportunity to have proper input on The Port Company as they look to their future.’
