Gr-eight show of force by Duleek

-

DULEEK made light of having to move to a neutral venue as the DIFE pitch in Drogheda witnessed a goal bonanza on Sunday afternoon.

With the club anxious to get the game played and fearful of what the weekend weather might do to their Tollstone pitch, they took the decision well in advance to move to the all-weather and it paid rich dividends against already-relegated Kingscourt Harps.

The result, following on from a tremendous victory over title contenders Trim Celtic the previous weekend, actually moves Duleek into the top half of the table, but they still need a couple of points from their two remaining games to make absolutely sure they can’t be dragged back into the drop zone.

Pete Brennan’s team more or less put this game to bed inside the opening 10 minutes, scoring twice.

Burke for goal number one, and Burke was also on the end of a similar move involving Barry Kavanagh to double Duleek’s advantage.

Kingscourt, who had amassed the princely total of two points from their previous 16 games, did briefly get the score back to 2-1 when Duleek were caught sleeping in defence and a Harps player lifted the ball over the back-tracking Gary Nugent before beating goalkeeper Mark Kelly.

However, McGroggan replied almost immediately to restore Duleek’s two-goal cushion and by half-time they had extended their lead still further to 5-1.

The management team emptied their subs bench in the second half, but it remained largely one-way traffic and Duleek added a further three goals to their tally without reply.

Kavanagh for once didn’t get on the scoresheet, but his strike partner Alan Wilton more than made up for that by netting a hat-trick, while McGroggan grabbed his second of the afternoon and Karl Dyas added another.

The goal of the game, though, was scored by Matthew Noone who got on the end of an exquisite through-ball by substitute Gareth Toal before supplying a finish to match.

Duleek’s two remaining matches are against title favourites Newfoundwell and Ardee Celtic. The latter are one of the other clubs in the relegation mix following their 4-0 defeat away to OMP United during the week.

DULEEK: Mark Kelly (Alan Byrne), Robbie Daly (Gareth Toal), Caelan Duff (Jamie Flaherty), Gary Nugent, Bryan Murphy, Chris McDonnell, Matthew Noonne, James Burke (Karl Dyas), Cormac McGroggan, Barry Kavanagh (Jamie O’Leary), Alan Wilton.
