D2K FOR ONE LAST TIME.

The phenomena that is The D2K will ride out of Dunleer on June 16th this year and the sad news that this will be it’s last outing.

The Charity Cycle, in aid of Motor Neuron Ireland and Paul’s Fight4Life started off as a one day spin to Kilkenny and, latterly to Ballinasloe in Galway and has become an event that, quite literally, had no equals. Last year, a whopping total of €80,000 was gathered and it’s hoped that this year’s figures will eclipse that.

I know for a fact that north of 40 people from Monasterboice peddled from east to west last year and it is hoped for similiar support this time.

It’s a very well run show and training for same will begin pretty imminently.

Entries are now being accepted and please go to The D2K website for more info.

Want to do something for the betterment of others? Want to do something that will be also be for the betterment of yourself? Sure you do.

The Irish Cancer Society is looking for volunteers from this area, to drive people undergoing treatment, to and from hospitals in Drogheda and Dublin. You will need to use your own transport, but your expenses will be paid and you’ll be doing a job that, quite simply has few equals, in terms of importance. Please ring Gail on 012310566 for more info.

SAMARITANS.

Also, in the same vein, The Samaritans are looking for volunteers in this area. You should ring 041 9843844, if interested.

COMHGHAIRDEAS - ARDEE COMMUNITY SCHOOL

A significant piece of history was created on Saturday 31st March 2018 in Newbridge, when Ardee Community School were crowned All Ireland Schools ‘C’ Championship winners having accounted for Waterford side, St. Declan’s Community School, on a scoreline of 1-9 to 0-3. This was a first for Ardee C C, and may very well be only a precursor of better to come. A number of young men from surrounding clubs were influential in this successful outcome including, Jack Grimes, Ben Quaile, Cathal Fleming and Craig Englishby (all Mattock Rangers GFC) and Cormac Rafferty and Cathal Duff (Syddan GFC).

While all the aforementioned did not play in the final, they were part of a panel of players, each of whom made a valuable contribution throughout the championship campaign. Well done to all involved, particularly the players, in this successful All Ireland win. You did yourselves, your families, your clubs, your community and your school proud. I’m sure that this momentous win will be celebrated by you School and Clubs in due course. Comhghairdeas aris do gach dhuine a bhi pairteach!

A LOCAL AFFAIR

Congratulations and best wishes to Ceara Carpenter (Drogheda) and Daire Englishby (Collon) who were married in the Church of Mary Immaculate, Collon on Saturday 24th March. Ceara is daughter of Austin and Marian Carpenter, while Daire is son of Bridget and the late Sean Englishby.

As for the parents, neighbours Austin and Bridget attended Grangegeeth NS a few years ago, while at about the same time Marian and Sean (RIP) attended Collon NS. Austin and Sean played for Mattock Rangers at the same time, and were formidable opponents to those who encountered them. A little bit of history is created every day! Best wishes to Ceara and Daire and their respective families.
