Scotland’s The Bluebells disbanded in the mid-eighties, so this 1993 number one in the UK and Irish charts was a real bolt from the blue. It came about after the song, previously released in 1984, was featured in a TV ad for the Volkswagen Golf. Capitalising on Young At Heart’s new-found success, The Bluebells reformed for a spell, appearing on Top of the Pops. The re-release spent four weeks on top of the UK charts, a considerable improvement over the 1984 release which had reached No. 8 in the UK, and 13 in Ireland. The Bluebells were not the first group to record Young At Heart as Bananarama had recorded the original version for their debut album Deep Sea Skiving in 1983. Songwriting credits went to Sara Dalling, Siobhan Fahey and Keren Woodward or Bananarama, and Robert Hodgens of The Bluebells, Fahey’s then boyfriend.
