Darma McMahon denied role because she was a woman!
A TALE from the past that I would love to know more about.
Almost 45 years ago, Darma McMahon from Rathmullen Park was denied the chance to become a valuer at the Government Valuation Office because she was a woman.
The 22-year-old, who held a diploma in environmental economics after four years study at the Bolton Street College of Technology, Dublin, applied for one of 10 vacancies in the Valuation Office. She was told : “The question of admitting female candidates to future jobs will be considered “.
She said; “This is blatant discrimination, purely on the grounds that I am a woman. There is no difference in the exams for either sex.’
In the past the job had been confined to males and it was the Valuation Office who decided what qualities or qualifications prospective employees should have, said a spokesman.
Darma was only the third girl to graduate from Bolton Street College with a diploma in environmental economics.
Did she eventually get the job I wonder?
Festivals
Louth County Council in collaboration with Drogheda Port Authority is hosting The Irish Maritime Festival on 16th & 17th June, 2018.
It’s certainly a date for the diary.
The arts festival is in May and there’s some great events planned.
The June bank holiday also has the fantastic Vantastival at Beaulieu House.
It was a huge success last year.
And of course, Fleadh Cheoil is fast approaching with a week of music and craic in August.
