Too dangerous for many Slane students to walk to school

-

I SUPPOSE it’s another reason why Slane needs a bypass.

I was at the Laytown/Bettystown area council meeting recently and there was great discussion about schools and access to schools.

The likes of Donacarney suffers because there is a poor footpath infrastructure and you only need to chat to Stephen McKee and he’ll outline his campaign for paths from the likes of Grange Rath to the the Mill Road and down to Donacarney to allow a safe route to local schools.

But in Slane it’s totally opposite.

Wayne Harding explained that there’s footpath access to the school in the village - but a lot of people won’t allow their children to use that route.

The problem is the volume of big trucks rumbling through the village and the real risk that at any time, they could mount a path.

Slane has been strangled due to a lack of a bypass for too long and let’s hope the ongoing plans for a new route will finally sort out the problem.
