Wee blow for Louth as Burns suffers injury

- JOHN SAVAGE

PETE McGrath will be sweating over the fitness of ace attacker Ryan Burns this week as Louth assess the extent of an ankle injury the Hunterstown Rovers man sustained on club duty on Sunday afternoon.

The corner forward scored 2-1 before adjourning prematurely in a comfortable win for Rovers over St Mochta’s.

If the injury is serious it will be a hammer blow for McGrath who is already anxiously waiting to see if Sam Mulroy and Jim McEneaney make it back in time for the Leinster Championship clash with Carlow on May 13th.

Both players have been out for some time and McGrath admitted last week that match fitness will be a concern even if they do return to full training in time.

Losing Burns would be a bitter blow for the Reds and McGrath faces another anxious evening this Friday when his players play their final club match ahead of the Carlow encounter.

After that the mandatory 13-day rest period kicks in for inter-county panellists. At the moment the county board have scheduled one round of star games for the weekend of the Carlow game.

If Louth make it through to the Leinster semi-final clubs will play without their county stars again on Tuesday, May 15th with the round one matches postponed during Storm Emma pencilled in for that date.

There is also a round scheduled for May 25th, which is two nights before the Reds potential semi-final date with Kildare.
