‘Petens’ Mooney was IRA company head from 1918-21

THE death took place suddenly on Sunday last of Mr Peter Mooney, Newtown Cottages, Termonfeck­in. Deceased who was in failing health for some time was in his early sixties and his sudden passing came as a shock to his relatives and a large circle of friends.

” Petens “as he was affectiona­tely called took a prominent part in the fight for freedom and was captain of the local IRA company from 1918-21. Afterwards he was employed as an overseer by the Louth Co. Council from which post he recently resigned due to ill health. He was long-associated with the local G.A.A. club and was one of its most ardent supporters. His funeral which took place from Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital on Monday evening was one of the largest seen in the district for a long time paid tribute to the high esteem in which he was held.

The coffin was draped in the Tri-colour and a guard of honour was formed at the hospital by members of “A “Company 1st Battalion old LRA. under Mr Christy Fairclough.

Internment took place in the family burial ground Termonfeck­in on Tuesday; where full military honours were accorded, by a contingent of F.C.A- from Gormanston Camp under the command of Capt. Sean Marray. A guard of honour was formed outside the church and at the graveside by his old IRA comrades. 1st Battalion Drogheda Old I.R.A. was represente­d by Mr. Thomas Kelly.

Very Rev. P. Canon McKevitt, P.P., assisted by Rev. S. Crowley. C.C., officiated at the graveside. Chief mourners: Mrs. Ann Mooney, (widow), Mrs. Mary Mooney (mother), Patrick and Michael (sons), Thomas and Simon (brothers), Mrs. H. Synnott (sister), and a large number of grandchild­ren and relatives.
