Painting of Dominic’s bridge good start to work

-

THE painting of St Dominic’s bridge after almost three decades has been welcomed by a local councillor, who hopes this can be the start of a rejuvenation project in the area.

Independent Councillor Kevin Callen (pictured) has said after representations he has been making to Louth County from last June, the initial works on the bridge, dating to the year 1863, show the potential for the area in terms of a public walkway and entry point to the ramparts.

“The painting of the railings is fantastic as a first step in what needs to be an overall cleanup of the bridge and the ramparts walkway out to Oldbridge,” he told the Drogheda Independent.

“This is a great start, but we need to get the overall area up to scratch”.

Cllr Callan says that in the coming weeks he’ll be calling on the council to improve the road surface on the bridge and to clear large vegetation which is growing out of the walls on both sides of the River.

“The reality is the ramparts is not in the state they should be either and I will be working on this with the council and community groups in the coming weeks to ensure that the entire ramparts are also made much more attractive to people to walk and cycle.”
