It’s home sweet home for Curraha

Curraha 1-15 Walterstown 2-7

DESPITE trailing at half-time, Curraha produced a fine second-half display to come out winners in this rescheduled Division 2 AFL encounter at home last Sunday.

Due to pitch conditions this was Curraha’s first home game of the year and it took them until the second half to acclimatise to their surroundings after conceding two opening-half goals.

Walterstown were seeking only their second win of the campaign and they were well on the way to lifting themselves off the foot of the table when leading 2-4 to 0-8 at the break.

Stephen Davis had the visitors off the mark from a free before Curraha responded with points from Conor Moriarty (two), Jack O’Connor and Andrew Coyle.

Davis added two more points and then the Blacks struck for two quick-fire goals, both scored by Brian O’Connell. Former Drogheda United player Michael Clarke created the first goal with a brilliant pass and Alan Wall added a point before O’Connell’s second goal.

That Walterstown lead would have been greater but for the accuracy of Conor Moriarty who kept his side in contention with a succession of points.

David Toner reduced the deficit on the restart, but by the 40th minute Walterstown led 2-6 to 0-9.

Curraha lost David Coyle and Brian Murphy, both to black cards, but replacement Padraic O’Hanrahan was pivotal in creating Curraha’s goal when he played in Moriarty with a sublime pass.

This gave Curraha great momentum and Moriarty and Toner added points to put their side in front with 15 minutes remaining.

A Walterstown point brought the game back to the minimum, but that was to be their last score as Curraha finished the stronger with four unanswered points in the last 10 minutes.
