Joy for Albion, Rathmullen too
THE celebrations weren’t just confined to the Newfoundwell area on Sunday evening as Albion Rovers and Rathmullen Celtic also clinched league titles.
Leading marksman Evan Corlett scored both goals for Albion Rovers as they captured the Division 2 crown with a 2-0 win over Parkvilla in Navan, and with the young age profile of the Monasterboice side they are capable of holding their own in the second tier next season.
There was high tension around Meadowview as Rathmullen went into their game at home to Donacarney Celtic knowing they had to better Bay’s result in Newtown to capture the Division 3 title, while the same outcome for both clubs would have forced a title play-off.
However, Bay went down 1-0 to a 10th-minute goal scored by Newtown’s Darren Smith, and Rathmullen then hit the front through Paul Doyle.
Jack Tunstead subsequently levelled for Donacarney, though, and another goal for the Meath club would have led to a winner-takes-all clash between Rathmullen and Bay.
In the end the side captained by Sean Thornton managed to hold out and the Division 2 title was theirs.
