DROGHEDA UNITED SLIGO ROVERS 0 4

A WELL-DRILLED, strong and skilful Sligo Under-17s team will take some stopping on this evidence after storming to a big victory over their Drogheda counterparts at a sunny United Park on Saturday.

As early as the first minute Euan Niven made a brilliant point-blank save from the away side’s centre forward and on seven minutes he tipped a good shot over the bar.

It was not until the 14th minute that the Drogs threatened as good following up from Cian Hussey and Calum Leonard ended in a loose ball being headed wide. The Drogs were finding it hard to get a foothold, though, and the first goal came on 19 minutes.

On 27 minutes Leonard turned smartly in the box but drilled his shot wide. Niven made a couple of smart saves, but on 42 minutes the home defence was breached again and the visitors were 2-0 up.

In the second period Drogheda showed a marked improvement but only created half-chances and Sligo scored twice more, the first of those a deflection which looped viciously over Niven’s head. DROGHEDA UTD: Euan Niven, Arturs Balavins, Tadgh King (Kyle Cosgrove), Pedro White, Ross Harper, Josh Dunbar, Kian Hussey (Gregory Akinsanya), Bradley Caffrey (Ross Quigley), Calum Leonard, Jamie Fagan, Luke Campbell (Dylan Cowman). Sub not used: Ben Murphy.
