Cushinstown juveniles shine in championships
DAY two of the Meath Championships on Saturday saw a large contingent of Cushinstown’s juvenile athletes travel to Claremont Stadium in Navan where there was an abundance of new personal bests and county medals.
In the U-18 shot putt, for example, Aoife Lenehan won the gold medal, while in the U-16 javelin Aine O’Sullivan claimed the gold and Katie Lenehan the silver, with these positions reversed in the discus competition.
Aine completed her successful day by coming third in the U-16 high jump, while Jack Mc Geer ran very well in the U-16 boys 100m to finish third and achieved a brilliant silver medal in the long jump.
In the U-15 shot putt it was a clean sweep for the Cushinstown girls, with Amy Callaghan, Amy Bellew, Mollie White and Niamh Quinn achieving a notable 1-2-3-4, while Amy Callaghan and Niamh Quinn also ran very well in the 100m in that age group.
In the U-14 long jump Ella Barry performed brilliantly to claim the gold medal, with silver going to Laura Bolster who went on to win the 60m sprint. Loclainn Harris did brilliantly in the U-14 boys long jump to come second.
In the U-13 shot putt April Andrews, Niamh Byrne and Ellen Gough all threw well, April and Niamh also ran well in the 60m sprints and Ellen did very well in the high jump to come fifth.
Still in this age group, Aoife Rohan achieved a great silver medal in the high jump, Lee Callaghan was equally impressive when claiming gold in the high jump and silver in the long jump.
At U-12 level, Nia Hetherton was also in great form - first in the high jump and performing well in the turbo javelin, while in that latter event Eva Gallagher and Katie Lawlor were fifth and sixth respectively and Eva also ran very well in the gruelling 600m.
John Dardis, Andrew Gough, Kevin Doyle and Luke McAleese all did well in the U-12 long jump, while John and Andrew had great runs in the 600m and Kevin and Luke also ran well in the 60m. In the shot putt Kevin Doyle was in great throwing form, winning the gold medal.
Roisin Quinn, Anna Dardis and Jane McDermott all performed very well in the U-11 long jump, with Roisin just missing out on the medals in fourth, and the trio also ran very well in the competitive 60m sprints. In the U-11 turbo javelin Barry Lenehan threw brilliantly to claim gold, while Peter Bellew also threw very well as well as finishing fourth, just out of the medals, in his first high jump competition.
In the U-10 girls turbo javelin Aoife Cassidy was in great throwing form, claiming the silver medal, while Harry Gough did very well in the boys long jump and 60m events.
Kacey MacManus, Annalise Harris and Maria Dardis all did brilliantly in the U-9 long jump, with Kacey McManus claiming the gold and Annalise the bronze medal, while Annalise and Maria also ran very well in the U-9 60m.
