Home sweet home for Alverno

-

ALVERNO VALLEY INN 5 2

THIS was the first final staged in the Alverno, and it was ‘home sweet home’ as the Laytown team prevailed after mounting a comeback on a similar scale to Carranstown’s in the Grimes Cup.

With names being drawn, the away side galloped into an early lead through Robert Marry and Anthony Goodman and at that point the Dunleer side looked to be in a commanding position.

However, Eamon Higgins put Alverno on their way when defeating Fergus Lambe in the third leg and John Mc Namara continued the good work when just getting home in a tight and tense fourth game - 2-1 against Joe Callaghan.

Davy Myles then moved the Alverno closer to the winning line when defeating Peter Flanagan 2–0, before Pa Murray had the pleasure of winning the sixth game and securing the title for the Laytown side when just getting home against Andrew Robinson - 2-1.

Captain Colin Sweeney completed the rout when outpointing John Whelan 2-0 in the final match to complete a memorable night for Alverno.

As usual, League committee personnel made various presentations to both teams afterwards, with the winners receiving a Shield, team plaques and a cash prize and the runners-up bagging a cash prize.
