Patrick Deary of Drogheda and Croton, New York

-

WHAT became of Patrick A Deary I wonder.

A Drogheda man, he served in the US army in World War 1 and saw action in Champagne, Luneville and Baccarat.

He lived in Croton on the Hudson in New York.

He was wounded in action in July 1918

Sabrina Martha Farley served as nurse in WWI

WHAT a woman Sabina Martha Farley was. The Drogheda woman was a matron in the military hospital in Fermoy but was to see action in the South African war from 1899 to 1902 as a nurse and won a medal and a silver badge. She also served in the 1914-1918 war and died at the Adelaide Hospital in Dublin on June 1 1918 from illness, contracted while on active service. She is buried in Mount Jerome cemetery. She was born in 1872 and was daughter of Charles Farley.

Slane poet James Gallagher

ANOTHER question. Is there much information out there on Slane poet James Gallagher, whose poems were published in the “Drogheda Independent “frequently back in the 1920s

Maureen to work for Max Factor

A story from 60 years ago and I wonder how did it end.

Maureen Glover (22), of Fair Street, was appointed to the staff of the Max Factor Cosmetics Company. Maureen travelled to Bournemouth to study beauty techniques and make-up.

Queues on Shop Street for oranges

JUST after the war, in late 1945, a strange occurance happened in Shop Street (above) - an orange arrived!

Local people hadn’t tasted the fruit for years but on this day, a supply arrived in Drogheda and West Street stocks were soon sold out.

Then, later in the evening, a box was opened at Liptons in Shop Street.

Within minutes there were queues onto the street, so much so, the gardai were called to keep order.

Tom Lynch was Newfoundwell star

ANOTHER mention of Newfoundwell soccer now. While the present side is a fine one, the former Newfoundwell were awesome too. I see from a 1946 report that they had quite a side. Prominent juniors Included in their ranks were Tom Lynch who holds a record number of Junior International caps, and Jack Grogan, both former Drogheda United players, and also Patrick Campbell who figured on the United team as well.
