Greene the master at Drogheda 10k

- By HUBERT MURPHY

DUNLEER Athletic Club star Darragh Greene stormed to a stunning win in the Drogheda 10k race on Sunday - on the warmest race day in years.

The flying Greene led for most of the way from club colleague Thomas Cotter and he kept that advantage to the finish.

He came home in a cracking time of 32.47 with his fellow black and amber clubmate Cotter - back from injury - finishing in 33.32.

Simon Ryan from Boyne AC, a former winner of the race, came home in 33.57.

Drogheda and District AC had a great run of athletes in the top 10, with Shane Larkin the first home of the crew in 35.55. Paul Smith was in next and then Pat O’Grady in a superb time of 36.54.

The first woman home was Ruth Fitzgerald from Trinity in 37.54.

A huge crowd turned out to cheer on the athletes with the Samba Mamas performing to keep the tempo high in the draining last stretch up Dominick Street.

Up to 2,000 athletes from around the country took part in the event which has now become a great tradition in the town.
