Keeper Sheehy saves day for table-toppers

-

TABLE-TOPPERS Syddan continued their pursuit of promotion as they maintained their unbeaten run in Division 2 at home last Saturday.

A penalty block by keeper Peter Sheehy from Stephen Coogan 10 minutes from the finish proved crucial in what was a closely contested game.

Dunderry opened brightly with two early points and it was 0-4 to 0-1 in their favour by the 11th minute. However, they had to settle for a minimum lead at the break, 0-6 to 0-5, after Daire Rowe contributed the last two points of the half.

Rowe accounted for three of Syddan’s points in the opening half, while Brian Dillon and Cormac Rowe also hit the target.

The visitors stretched their lead within a minute of the restart, but Syddan were level following two more points from Daire Rowe. Further points from Gary and Paddy Farrelly put Syddan ahead and they never relinquished the lead after that.

Four points separated the sides when Dunderry were awarded the penalty, but their failure to convert that chance left them struggling to reduce the deficit.

They did close the gap to three points on two occasions after that, but sub Cathal Dardis made certain of victory for Syddan with the game’s last point.
