RTE penalty prize event

April 1977

-

SUNDAY was a big day for six boys of the North Eastern Region of RTE Penalty Prize 1977 competition when the region final was held at Lourdes Stadium,

The lads were fighting for one place in the national final. Dennis Haggins, representing Drogheda Town, was first into battle and, even though Leo Byrne was in fine fettle, the local boy slotted home five goals out of eight. Young Peter Farrell, representing the Drogheda District however was equal to the task and he too scored five.

Barry Murphy of Dundalk missed with his first kick but on his seventh shot had accumulated five goals and amid great excitement he left the Drogheda keeper stranded to score six out of eight to win the regional final. He now goes forward to Dalymount and possibly Europe. Mr. Pat Carr presented his magnificent trophy on behalf of Messrs Betaway of Drogheda and plaques donated by Boyne Rovers FC were presented to the five runners-up.

Mr. John Clutterbuck of the ISRS was the official in charge.
