Robbie Horgan off on trial to Scottish side Raith Rovers
May 1991
DROGHEDA United’s star goalkeeper Robbie Horgan was this week preparing for a week long trial at Scottish First Division side Raith Rovers, knowing a successful seven days could spell the beginning of a career at the game’s highest level.
Considerable interest from Raith boss Jimmy Nicholl, the former Manchester United and Northern Ireland player, prompted Drogheda boss Liam Brien to allow Robbie to travel and the keeper will be anxious to grab the opportunity with both hands, literally!
Nicholl, in fact, revealed that he watched Horgan in a couple of games last season and was impressed.
Liam Brien, as expected, has mixed emotions on the subject, hoping that the 22 year old, at the club for three seasons, can make a career for himself in the big time game but also worried about losing him just as the club have gained promotion to the Premier Division.
“I wouldn’t like to lose him right now but I won’t stand in his way. He knows if he’s successful he could stand a chance of playing first team football at Raith,’ he stated.
“I feel he can make it in professional soccer because he has learned a lot in the past couple of seasons but again he can still only go on learning. The experience in the League of Ireland will stand to him and perhaps it is time for him to try his luck and see what it’s like”, the manager continued.
